I was lucky enough to be sitting right down in front of Al's club the night he did a tribute to Satchmo right after his passing and I can tell you everyone in the place had tears in their eyes. Never ever heard so much emotion in anyones playing before or since.

Most Tenor sax players don't even know that you can play this many notes, rhythms, licks and different sounds on one tune on one instrument all at the same time. I contend that Tommy Emmanuel cannot possibly be that good! He doesn't even have a stick bending do hicky on that thing. Really, check it out and look for yourself. He doesn't even have a cheater bar either so, he must play everything in the same key, no?

Tommy is wonderful. Thanks for posting that Donny. That has to be the best performance of Classical Gas I have heard. And the amazing thing is his brother Phil is also master of the guitar though he plays electric mostly. Must be something in their gene pool. Here is a clip of the two of them that includes clowning around both playing the one guitar.

Wow I didn't realize that was Freddie Ravel. I have seen Freddie play on around 20 different occasions at a Greek restaurant in Los Angeles. He would play with his band just a few feet away from our table. All his solos are brilliant as is his song writing. An awesome keyboard player and such a nice guy as well. He got so used to us coming to see him play he would always say hello to us.

Have you listened to his albums. They are magic. It is Latin infused jazz which is very catchy to listen too. He always plays with prominent jazz musicians. Over the years he has also been the Music Director for Tower Of Power and also for Al Jarreau.

Nigel wow that's really amazing!! love when they play together on one guitar!! Tommy performed here on the shore not long again for a summer show.....hope to see him next time for sure!

Well Donny, since you've responded seven times to a post asking for a single answer, maybe you could tell us PRECISELY what your favorite solo on a recording is. Just a simple answer, please, no need to scour YouTube for something to post.

I cant answer with one solo ...as there are too many to decide on just one that would be silly. I posted a few that I enjoy...sorry it bothers you no one is forcing you to look at the videos,....I love all kinds of music & find great players in many of them.

I guess I was worried about all the wasted 'bandwidth'....but then, here I am doing the same thing. Darn.

Is bandwidth 'finite' or 'infinite' ?!? ... if it is 'used' does it lessen? ... if it is 'not used', does it accumulate? ... where is it 'stored' ? ... Things that make you go "hmmm' ...

I agree, Donny ... there are too many great solos in ALL the genres of music I listen too ... I would not be able to pick one as the 'best' in any one genre, let alone a 'best' of all ...

My favorite is my NEXT one. Looking forward to feeling well enough to start tinkering with the keyboard again.

With Nigel giving Tommy's performance a "thumbs-up," I'm going out on a limb here and hoping I don't get thrown out of the room!

I'd have to go with UD here.....a virtuoso guitarist, but "too many notes!" IMO....he butchered the song. It's the greatest example of where someone should have kept in mind that "silence is golden!" In this case, "silence is golden" between notes!

I think I liked Rico's Maria Elena better.

I never expect everyone to agree with my opinion. Opinions are a personal view. Dunno why you would think I would take offense to that. You would have never seen me throw anyone out because they disagreed with me. We all have different personal opinions. That is only natural. I do realize you were just kidding though.

Gary your son can really shred. Please pass on my compliments to him from me. Being a guitarist/keyboard player in a classic rock band I can really appreciate his talent. Is he currently playing in a band or recording? If not he should be.

Yep, Phil's solo really elevated an already great tune to where it's often considered a "new" standard.

I have the Yamaha Electone Course Step 8 (last book in the course) that has the whole tune written out for organ (with left hand and bass pedals) and I used to teach the tune.

It has the sax part transcribed pretty accurately, especially the intro and outro of the solo and it's in the original key of "D".

I play the tune quite often and have even made a style for it on my Tyros4...I generally try to get the intro and outro of the solo as close as possible, and I sort of improvise the middle part fairly close to Phil's version, although some sax licks are still a challenge on keys.

In any case, the tune has some sweet chords in it...the second chord in the verse, Bm6th, is one some players play as straight Bm and it just doesn't sound right...there are some On-Bass chords that are also essential for a truly accurate rendition...Billy hit one out of the park with this tune, for sure.

Unfortunately I don't have a printer/scanner, but I may get one in the near future from a client. If I do, I'll post the transcription here.

Nigel, my son's old band gets together once in a while and performs at some of Baltimore's larger clubs, often drawing 300 or more people to each performance. Ian.....that song is about as near perfect as a song could be. And, yes, the sax solo in the middle and at the end put the tune up there with the best of them.

I sing it in D, but it's too high for me and I'm too lazy to lower it.

I've been looking all day for my transcription....can't find it. And I wrote it out note for note! If you can get it up here or send me a copy, I, for one, would appreciate it.

Nigel.......that's one I DO agree with you on. I forgot all about that tune and how I used to be amazed over that guitar solo. Like....just when you digested one measure he was playing, the next measure was somewhere else. And those triplets were brilliant. Great tune too!
